Web 2.0 Video Tools + Introduction to Flash
Posted on March 17th, 2009 No commentsHi everyone,
Here’s a listing of tools that we’ll be covering at our next meeting on 3/18/2009.
- Jing (http://www.jingproject.com): Quite possibly my favorite Web 2.0 application. Jing lets you record pictures and video/audio directly from your computer. The program allows you to save the files to your machine or upload them to the Jing servers where you can easily grab a handy “embed” link to place on your blog or website.
- Youtube (http://www.youtube.com): The largest video sharing site on the web also allows you the ability to easily upload your own content. Access to Youtube is as easy - just log in with your Google account!
- Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com): A high-quality free video sharing site that allows you to upload high definition videos.
- Blip.tv (http://www.blip.tv): A great video sharing site that focuses on episodic video.
- 30 day trial version of Flash (http://www.adobe.com/downloads/): Take advantage of Adobe’s very generaous “try before you buy” program and download a free 30 day version of the Flash authoring environment.
- Craig’s Flash Tutorials (http://tutorials.craigkapp.com/?page_id=106): My personal Flash CS3 tutorial site. We’ll be covering the first lesson in class together.

Augmented Reality using Flash
Posted on February 19th, 2009 No commentsRecently I’ve been researching “Augmented Reality” techniques and how they can be applied to support educational / instructional applications. For those of you who don’t know what Augmented Reality (AR) is, it’s a way in which we can “superimpose” a layer of additional information onto the “real world” through the use of various types of technologies. It’s actually easier to show than to describe! Here are a few demos of me showing off my newest AR creations:
In each of these demos you can see that I’m using my webcam to detect a special symbol - this symbol, when recognized, tells the computer to overlay the incoming video stream with a 3D object or animation. The orientation of the symbol gives the system the ability to determine its location in space as well as rotation and tilt.
I’m hoping that I will be able to expand my research into creating interactive tools that be used by teachers to explain difficult concepts to their students. I’m also working on developing a streamlined display system that may include head-mounted glasses that allows a person to walk freely around a space and experience any AR content that may be present. Stay tuned!

I think this is a viable way for us to meet, especially if we can try to do truly integrated voice chat next time. Here’s a quick listing of some of the concepts we covered in class tonight.
